Lacuna

An exercise in what isn’t there.

Lacuna takes its name from the Latin for a gap, cavity or missing space. Here, absence becomes structure.

The chair is constructed from a series of intersecting planes, their surfaces carved away to leave an irregular skeletal framework. The resulting voids reduce visual mass while revealing the geometry of the chair itself: legs become lines, panels become frames, and negative space becomes as important as the material surrounding it.

Viewed from different angles, Lacuna continually redraws itself. Openings overlap, disappear and reappear, creating an ever-changing composition of solid and void, light and shadow.

Despite its graphic appearance, there is something unexpectedly organic about its structure. The asymmetric apertures recall cellular forms, eroded stone and the internal architecture of bone, while the uncompromising planar construction keeps the object resolutely architectural.
